Just above the chique Gstaad (about 4 km away), in the top ski Gstaad region, is the peaceful ski holiday resort Saanen. Saanen, like Gstaad, is not the cheapest choice for a skiing holiday, but the accommodations are a lot less expensive. Because there is a little quieter environment, it still attracts a slightly larger proportion of families with children.

The ski slopes in Gstaad are especially suitable for beginners and for advanced skiers. Gstaad is a paradise! The ski slopes can be classified into four ski sections: Sector 1 which includes the slopes around the Hornberg and Rellerligrat (trails with the best view of the area); Sector 2 (the largest sector) at Eggli with the huge mountains Vidamenette, Wasserngrat, and Wispile,.which have enough challenge (including the black slope at the back of La Vidamenette) for every skiing level; Sector 3 containing the easier runs around Chateau d'Oex; and, Sector 4 where you can take the lift to the Col du Pillon and reach the altitude of the vast Gstaad Glacier 3000. These ski slopes also offer a bus service to the ski resort Villars-Gryon and Les Diablerets.

The restaurants in Saanen are perfect, but for the real apre-ski, you have to take a few miles drive to Gstaad itself.

Snowboarders can enjoy four fantastic fun parks, The Snowpark at Glacier 3000, Vanilla Noir Park in Saanenmöser, the Schneefall Park in Zweisimmen, and the Snow Park La Braye in Chateau d'Oex. The off-piste possibilities for snowboarders are equally fantastic in this winter holiday destination!

Skischools and ski hire in Saanen

With more than 360 ski instructors the Ski Gstaad ski area has a true army of red ski experts who come to your aid on the slopes. The schools include: the Schneesportschule Zweisimmen, ski school Snowsports Saanenmöser, Snowboard Snowsports Saanen, Snowsports Schonried, Schneesportsschule Lauenen and a group of private skischools. The largest of all is obviously Snowsports Gstaad. In Saanen is also a children's ski school specifically aimed at the smallest among us.
