Skiing in the land of the Vikings? Sweden is not as well known among the skiing die-hards, but who would like their skiing holiday to be a totally different experience, Sweden is a great choice. Enjoy a proper Smorgasbord (breakfast) every morning in a winter wonderland. Sweden has very favourable prices, beautiful countryside and many small ski resorts popular among families. As it should be in a country where men go with maternity leave, the facilities for childcare and kids-animation are perfect. A place where kids can have a skiing and snow-rich week like nowhere else! Small family ski areas in Sweden are Idre, Orsa, Säfsen, Sälen, and Vemdalen. For more adventurous types you can also go skiing in the northern (and thus much, much colder) of Sweden. Ski resorts way up north close to the arctic circle are: Riksgränsen, Björkliden, Dundret and Tärnaby. If there is enough snow, you can even go skiing on the Hammerbybacken ski slope, just outside Stockholm, the Swedish capital. Åre lastly, is the absolute highlight when it comes to ski holiday destinations in Sweden. Besides excellent facilities for skiers and snowboarders, Sweden is also a fantastic destination for cross-country skiers, including the famous Vasaloppet-cross-country race in Sälen, which is incomparable with anything in the world of cross-country skiing. (Every year nearly 20,000 participants!) Snow sports in Sweden, a great choice for the family and for cross-country skiing-fans!
