Ski holidays Thollon les Memises

What a little gem!! Our family recently discovered this small village beautifully positioned overlooking Lake Geneva and what a find. The traditional compact village has everything to make your stay memorable. There are two good restaurants in St Nicholas and La Outa. The 'Sli Bar' is a recent addition complete with pool table and plasma screen. The newly refurbished supermarket is lovley as is the superbly stocked Boulangerie. We stayed in a wonderful penthouse called Lake View in the Les Arolles building.We enjoyed superb views of the Lake Geneva ,by day and night which was just a s breath taking thanks to the lights in Switzerland reflecting in the Lake...Magical... Its fair to say the skiing is not extensive but there is certainly enough to keep an intermediate skier busy for several days. For a change of piste Chatel is 30 mins away by car,Bernex 5 miles and Chappelle 8 mles away. The scenery is simply stunning and the run down to the village must surely be one of the most picturesque in the Alps. Lift passes and equipment hire are very reasonable making this an ideal resort for family skiing .We intend to return to this beautiful, friendly and tranquil village before the end of the season.

Thollon has improved with the opening of the zig-zag path as a piste back down to the village. Runs are fairly short, particularly the nursery slopes. But there is one long run eastwards towards the Swiss border which is particularly scenic with extensive views over the Lake to Montreaux etc. The village faces north and comprises a true balcony with grand views over Lake Geneva and Lausanne and Evian/Thonon. Restaurants are few with L'outa being the firm favourite, with husband chef and wife front of house - cheese and local ham dishes a speciality. This is a perfect place for families as the ski runs all arrive back at the Station, so no chance of getting lost. The Ski School is good but ask for Jaques who is the cheesey, typical smooth Frenchman with excellent English. Marcelle also good. The accommodation in Thollon is really good but Fleur des Neiges is the best accommodation as it faces west and enjoys the best afternoon sun. Having a car is a bonus as you can alternate Thollon with other resorts including Villars in Switzerland (40 mins drive), Morzine, Let Gets, Avoriaz, Chapelle de Abondance (all between 35-50 mins drive. We drive up for 11.30 and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at 2/3 lift pass prices and avoid the rush (skkiing alone often as the French take their 2 hour lunch break!).
